Full Report:

In a startling revelation from an ABC News/Washington Post poll, a significant majority of Democrats believe that President Joe Biden should withdraw from his reelection campaign and allow another candidate to lead the party in the upcoming November election.

According to the survey, 56% of Democrats expressed that the 81-year-old Biden should end his candidacy, while only 42% believe he should continue his pursuit of reelection. The poll, reported by The Washington Post, highlights growing concerns within the Democratic Party about Biden's viability as a candidate.

The sentiment isn't confined to Democrats alone. The poll indicates that 67% of all U.S. adults think Biden should step aside, with a mere 30% supporting his bid for a second term. This widespread doubt about Biden’s candidacy comes in the wake of his poor performance in the June 27 debate against former President Donald Trump.

Despite mounting pressure from within his own party, Biden remains adamant about his campaign, determined to face Trump, the likely GOP nominee. The ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll also reveals that Biden and Trump are currently tied at 46% among registered voters.

However, this deadlock contrasts with other recent polls. RealClear Politics’ average of top national surveys, as of Thursday morning, shows Trump leading Biden by 3.3 percentage points. The inclusion of third-party candidates in the poll further complicates the race, with Trump at 43%, Biden at 42%, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 9%, and both Cornel West and Jill Stein garnering 2% each.

The poll further uncovers a bleak outlook on Biden’s job performance and mental acuity. A majority, 57%, disapprove of Biden’s job performance, while only 36% approve. Additionally, a mere 14% believe Biden is more mentally sharp than the 78-year-old Trump. A staggering 85% consider Biden too old for the presidency, compared to 60% who feel the same about Trump.

In the event Biden steps down, Vice President Kamala Harris emerges as the top choice among Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents to lead the party, with 29% support. She is followed by California Governor Gavin Newsom (7%), former First Lady Michelle Obama (4%), Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (3%), and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (3%). Notably, in a hypothetical matchup, Harris leads Trump by a narrow margin of 49%-46%.

This ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll was conducted online from July 5-9, surveying 2,431 adults in both English and Spanish. The poll’s partisan breakdown is 32% Democrats, 29% Republicans, and 27% independents, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
