Was Harris a McNoShow?

As Vice President Kamala Harris touts a McDonald's summer job from her college days, recent investigations raise questions about the truth behind the claim, leaving many wondering if this story is just another piece of political spin.

While running for president in 2019, then-Sen. Kamala Harris suddenly shared a relatable story: she had worked at McDonald’s during college. Oddly, after two decades in the public eye and writing two memoirs that never mentioned this job, the McDonald’s claim became a central talking point during her campaign.

Appearing on Drew Barrymore's daytime talk show in 2019, Harris confirmed the story when asked, “I heard a rumor that you worked at McDonald’s?” Harris replied, “Yes, I did work at McDonald’s. When I was at school … I did fries. And then I did the cashier.” Barrymore, seemingly unaware, responded with wide-eyed enthusiasm: “I didn’t know that about you.”

Harris has continued to promote this claim, even in her current presidential run. Far-left Politico highlighted it in an ad claiming Harris worked at McDonald’s to "pay her way" through college. However, the ad was soon corrected, noting that the job was simply to earn spending money.

Despite Harris doubling down on this story, her claim is now facing scrutiny, thanks to investigative journalism from the Washington Free Beacon. Despite efforts to verify the McDonald’s job, the Free Beacon found no solid evidence supporting Harris’s claim. Public records and her campaign have been notably vague on the specifics.

The New York Times, citing no sources, reported that Harris worked at a McDonald’s in Alameda one summer during college. However, Harris was attending Howard University in Washington, D.C., and details about this supposed job remain murky.

Perhaps the most revealing piece of evidence uncovered by the Free Beacon is a job application from 1987. As a second-year law student, Harris applied for a clerkship at the Alameda County District Attorney’s office. The application required a list of all jobs held in the past 10 years, but there was no mention of McDonald’s. Harris did, however, list a brief clerical job and “extensive travel” experiences but not the McDonald’s job.

The Free Beacon has sought clarification from the Harris campaign but has yet to receive a response. Even if the claim turns out to be false, the media is unlikely to hold Harris accountable. After all, if she’s willing to embellish something as minor as a summer job, how can voters trust her on bigger issues like fracking bans, electric vehicle mandates, and healthcare reform?

The double standards for Democrats remain alive and well.
