Victim's Family to Address GOP Convention

Rachel Morin's family, grappling with her tragic death allegedly at the hands of an illegal migrant, will attend the Republican National Convention, where her half-sister will speak on immigration enforcement policies in her honor.

The family of Rachel Morin, a mother of five allegedly raped and killed by an illegal migrant, has accepted an invitation from former President Donald Trump to attend the upcoming Republican National Convention.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Morin’s family—including her half-sister, two youngest children, three brothers, and other relatives—will attend the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week. Her half-sister, Erin Layman, is scheduled to speak on Tuesday night about Rachel and the immigration enforcement policies related to her death.

"This is a huge honor because I want to make an impact in Rachel’s name," Layman said. "I want to give Rachel the proper honor in all of this and for people to know our story and see our family together."

Morin’s death gained attention last month when her alleged killer, Salvadoran national Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, was discovered living in the U.S. illegally and arrested. Martinez-Hernandez, wanted for the murder of a woman in his home country, was charged with Morin's death after allegedly raping and killing her along a Maryland hiking trail in August 2023.

This is not the first time Trump has reached out to Morin’s family. Rachel Morin’s mother, Patty Morin, said last month that she was "deeply touched" by Trump’s condolence call, which brought her comfort during this difficult time.

The Morin family is using the public attention to advocate for change, hoping to prevent similar tragedies. "There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Rachels all over America, so we have to do our part to hopefully make change," Josh Morin said. "This is 100% political because it was politics that created this problem, and it is politics that are going to fix it."

Trump has previously featured other “angel” families—those who have lost loved ones to crimes committed by illegal immigrants—during his campaigns. Notably, he has connected with families such as Laken Riley’s and Jocelyn Nungaray’s, highlighting their tragic stories to advocate for stricter immigration policies.

Danielle Alvarez, a senior advisor for Trump’s campaign, stated to the Daily Caller News Foundation, "Joe Biden has opened our southern border to roughly 20 million illegal immigrants, including hundreds of terror suspects and violent criminals who have wreaked havoc on communities across the country. We are honored that Rachel Morin’s loved ones will address the nation at our Republican National Convention and give Rachel’s story the respect and attention it deserves, as it shows all Americans why we need President Trump to secure our border, deport illegal immigrants who commit crimes against innocent citizens, and make America safe again."
