Two Honduran brothers in the U.S. illegally have been arrested after a violent crime spree in Missouri left an Oklahoma man dead and a woman critically injured, sparking a multi-state investigation.
Two illegal immigrants from Honduras have been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting in Jasper County, Missouri, following a violent crime spree that left one man dead and another woman critically injured.
The incident began early Monday morning at a gas station near the Prigmore exit on I-44. Around 3:30 a.m., 26-year-old Adin Aman Cantarero Benitez approached a red Chevy Cobalt where 63-year-old James Gilmore, of Oklahoma, was seated. After a brief conversation, Benitez allegedly shot Gilmore, took his car, and met with his brother, 20-year-old Jose Cantarero Benitez, behind the gas station. The two brothers then drove east on I-44, where they dumped Gilmore’s body in a ditch at mile marker 14.8.
The suspects drove to Independence, Missouri, with Adin driving Gilmore’s stolen car and Jose driving a blue Toyota Tundra. Later that night, Adin was arrested for DWI, but at the time, his connection to the murder was unknown.
The following day, chaos erupted again. Independence Police were called after Jose allegedly attempted to carjack a vehicle, shooting a woman in the chest. He later fled the scene, pistol-whipped another woman, and was arrested after a foot chase by Kansas City police. The shooting victim remains in critical condition.
Authorities have confirmed that both brothers are in the U.S. illegally. Adin Benitez is facing charges of first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and first-degree robbery in Jasper County, with more charges expected for Jose. The stolen red Chevy Cobalt was recovered in Kansas City, and an autopsy on Gilmore is scheduled for Friday.
