Trump Surges Ahead in Georgia

In a pivotal rematch shaping up for November, Georgia's political landscape sees Joe Biden and Donald Trump locked in a tight race, with startling poll results and a looming debate casting shadows over their campaigns.

In 2020, Joe Biden narrowly defeated President Donald Trump in Georgia on his path to becoming the 46th president of the United States.

However, a recent poll from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution suggests Biden could face a tougher challenge if a rematch occurs this November. According to the poll, Trump currently leads Biden 43% to 38% among likely voters in Georgia, with Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. polling at 9%, and 8% of voters undecided. It's important to note that Kennedy is expected to qualify for the Georgia ballot despite not being listed yet.

The poll, conducted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs from June 11-22, surveyed 1,000 likely voters with a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

The upcoming debate between Biden and Trump on Thursday at 9 p.m. in Atlanta, hosted by CNN at its Midtown headquarters, adds further significance to these findings.

A key issue influencing voters, according to the poll, is inflation and the economy, with 42% of respondents indicating it will have the "biggest influence" on their decision.

Despite Trump's current lead, he faces significant challenges. Nearly half of those polled approved of a recent New York jury verdict that found the former president guilty of 34 felony charges, including a majority of independent voters. Approximately one-third of independents stated that these convictions would make them less likely to support Trump.
