Trump Best for Democracy Washington Post Poll

In a surprising turn, a new Washington Post poll has upended perceptions of who stands as the stronger defender of democracy between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden, setting a contentious tone for the upcoming election season.

A recent Washington Post poll, published Wednesday, suggests that former President Donald Trump is perceived as a stronger defender of democracy than President Joe Biden. Across six swing states won by Biden in 2020, Trump holds an 11-point lead over Biden when respondents were asked who they believe would better handle threats to democracy in the U.S.

According to the poll conducted by the Post and the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University:

  • 44% of respondents favored Trump

  • 33% favored Biden

  • 16% preferred neither

  • 7% chose both candidates

The survey sampled 3,515 registered voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin from April to May, with a margin of error of ± 2.9 percentage points.

The findings have sparked concerns among some Democrats about Biden’s reelection strategy centered on democracy, particularly following legal challenges against Trump and his recent conviction by a Manhattan jury in May. Other pressing voter concerns highlighted in consistent polling include inflation, immigration, and crime, where Trump currently holds an advantage.

Critics within Biden’s camp express unease about the administration’s response to these challenges. A Democrat strategist close to the campaign told Axios, “It is unclear to many of us watching from the outside whether the president and his core team realize how dire the situation is right now, and whether they even have a plan to fix it. That is scary.”

This sentiment is echoed by others in Biden’s orbit, where there’s a reluctance to voice skepticism about the current trajectory for fear of appearing disloyal. Justin Gest, a professor at George Mason University specializing in policy and government, remarked to the Post, “Many Americans don’t recognize Biden’s custodianship of our democracy, which is a bad sign for his campaign.”
