Rep. Tom Tiffany is demanding an investigation after discovering thousands of duplicate absentee ballots in Madison lacked barcodes, contradicting officials’ claims of secure voting processes.
Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) is calling for an investigation after discovering that thousands of duplicate absentee ballots sent to voters in Madison, Wisconsin, lacked the necessary barcodes, despite assurances from city officials that the ballots were properly coded.
In a post on X, Tiffany shared that officials from the Madison Clerk’s Office had previously stated that the duplicate ballots contained identical barcodes, which would prevent them from being submitted more than once. However, Tiffany claims his office has obtained evidence proving otherwise.
“DEVELOPING,” Tiffany wrote. “Although the Madison Clerk’s Office claims, ‘The voting system does not allow a ballot with the same barcode to be submitted,’ my office has proof that there is no barcode on the actual ballots.” The post included a photo showing a ballot without a barcode, raising concerns about potential vulnerabilities in the voting process.
This revelation comes a day after Madison officials admitted that 2,215 duplicate ballots had been mistakenly sent out to roughly 10 wards, attributing the issue to an “isolated error” that had been “quickly caught and corrected.” In response, Tiffany penned a letter to Maribeth Witzel-Behl, the city clerk of Madison, expressing his alarm and demanding answers.
“Like many Wisconsinites, I was alarmed by recent reports that ‘around 2,000’ duplicate ballots have been sent out by your office,” Tiffany wrote. He questioned how the error was discovered, the total number of affected ballots, and whether the Clerk’s Office had contacted law enforcement to determine if the issue resulted from incompetence or a deliberate act.
“This can’t just be swept under the rug,” Tiffany told Fox News in a statement. “The people responsible for this need to be held accountable.”
The situation has sparked concerns over election integrity, with Tiffany’s accusations adding fuel to ongoing debates about the security and transparency of the voting process. As calls for an investigation mount, the Madison Clerk’s Office is facing increasing scrutiny over its handling of absentee ballots and its assurances of a secure voting system.
