Progressives Begin Planning to Thwart Democracy

In the shadow of looming elections, a coalition of anti-Trump forces is marshaling legal firepower and strategic alliances to preempt potential threats to Trump election, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle over America's Democracy.

Anti-Trump groups, including the Center for American Progress and Never Trump organizations like Principles First, are gearing up for potential challenges in the lead-up to November. They are strategizing to resist anticipated actions they fear a second Trump administration might take, such as crackdowns on illegal immigration and abortion rights, as well as efforts to downsize the federal government or deploy troops for law enforcement.

The New York Times reported that these groups are collaborating on preemptive legal actions and intervention strategies. Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the CAP Action Fund, described their approach as necessary to protect democratic institutions from what they perceive as authoritarian tactics.

Among their initiatives are planning lawsuits, organizing conferences like the upcoming "Autocracy in America – A Warning and Response" at New York University, preparing to challenge deportation policies, and establishing a nationwide volunteer network to monitor and intervene in immigration raids. They are also recruiting plaintiffs sympathetic to their causes.

Meanwhile, Democratic governors have formed the Reproductive Freedom Alliance to coordinate efforts against potential federal restrictions on abortion. Led by California Governor Gavin Newsom, the alliance aims to pass protective legislation and ensure access to abortion services, including stockpiling medications like mifepristone.

The Brennan Center for Justice has enlisted journalist Barton Gellman to assist with scenario planning in anticipation of potential outcomes under both a Trump and Biden presidency. Michael Waldman, president of the Brennan Center, outlined their dual strategies: preparing to advocate for voting rights under Biden and mitigating perceived abuses of power under Trump.

In response, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung criticized these efforts as attempts to undermine the will of American voters, particularly if they choose to re-elect Trump. He characterized their actions as a threat to democracy.

Overall, these groups are mobilizing resources and strategies to proactively defend against perceived threats to civil liberties and democratic norms in the upcoming election cycle.
