Editorial
The American political system is reeling after a chaotic weekend announcement that President Biden will at least exit the race, if not the White House entirely. In a panic, Democratic leaders mostly rallied around Vice President Harris. Time is both her ally and her challenge. On one hand, no opponent has enough time before the scheduled Democratic Convention to mount a significant challenge. On the other hand, there is little time for Harris to overcome her public image issues.
Remarkably, the Democratic "Politburo" appears to have chosen a candidate with approval ratings even lower than Biden's. The latest YouGov poll shows her approval at a dismal 36 percent. The Achilles' heel of Harris's candidacy is clearly electability.
In their rush to celebrate the end of Biden's sinking campaign, the Democratic Party may have latched onto a rock instead of a lifeboat. Time and polling will reveal the outcome, but likely too late to change course. This shameful episode may be a win for the powerful party insiders, but a slap to the face to democracy.
