A majority of voters blame Vice President Kamala Harris for the record surge in illegal immigration, with swing voters showing strong dissatisfaction ahead of the 2024 election, according to a new poll.
A majority of likely voters hold Vice President Kamala Harris responsible for the surge in illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to a recent New York Times/Siena College poll. The survey reveals that 63 percent of likely voters blame Harris for the record levels of immigration over the last three and a half years, despite her attempts to distance herself from the issue.
In April 2021, President Biden appointed Harris to lead the administration’s efforts to address migration, prompting many to label her the “border czar.” Since then, illegal immigration has continued to rise, leading to increased criticism of Harris’s handling of the border. The poll shows that only 16 percent of likely voters believe Harris bears no responsibility for the situation.
Notably, 63 percent of swing voters place some level of blame on Harris, highlighting potential political fallout. The survey also found that 53 percent of likely voters trust former President Donald Trump more on immigration, with only 43 percent favoring Harris. Among swing voters, Trump’s advantage is even more pronounced.
As the Biden-Harris administration has overseen the admission of nearly 7 million migrants since taking office, Harris’s role in immigration is expected to remain a significant issue in the upcoming election cycle. The poll, conducted from September 3 to September 6, surveyed nearly 1,700 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.
