Newsweek Poll: 57 Percent of Biden Voters Say Hunter Should Serve Time

Top Points:

  1. Majority Support for Prison Time: A significant majority (57%) of Biden voters believe Hunter Biden should serve prison time following his conviction on three felony gun charges. This sentiment is echoed by 60% of overall survey respondents.

  2. Conviction Details: Hunter Biden was found guilty of lying on a gun-purchase form about his drug use, leading to his conviction for lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making false claims on the application, and illegal possession of a firearm. He faces up to 25 years in prison, with sentencing set for October 9.

  3. Upcoming Tax Trial: Hunter Biden is scheduled to stand trial on federal tax charges in September, with allegations that he failed to pay at least $1.4 million in taxes over four years while living an extravagant lifestyle. The back taxes have since been paid, but this trial follows closely on the heels of his recent gun charge conviction.

Full Report:

In a striking development, a majority of Biden voters believe that the President's son, Hunter Biden, should serve prison time following his recent conviction on gun charges. This sentiment is reflected in a new poll, which has captured the attention of many across the nation.

Last month, Hunter Biden was convicted of three felony charges related to his 2018 purchase of a revolver. Prosecutors argued that he lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by denying any illegal drug use or addiction. The jury found Hunter Biden, 54, guilty of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making false claims on the application, and illegally possessing the gun for 11 days.

Hunter Biden faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for no later than October 9. According to a Newsweek/Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey, 60% of respondents believe Hunter Biden should receive a custodial sentence. Notably, 57% of those who voted for President Joe Biden in the 2020 election agree that Hunter Biden should be imprisoned.

Overall, only 21% of respondents believe Hunter Biden should not serve prison time, while 19% are undecided. David Bredin of the Bredin Law Firm in New York suggested that Hunter Biden might only spend about a year in prison, factoring in good behavior and his lack of prior criminal history.

Some legal experts, as reported by Newsweek, have speculated that Hunter Biden might avoid a custodial sentence due to federal guidelines and the nature of the crime. Following his son's conviction, President Biden stated he would not pardon Hunter but did not rule out the possibility of commuting his sentence.

An Economist/YouGov poll conducted from June 16-18 found that 67% of respondents agreed with the jury's guilty verdict, including 60% of Democrats, 61% of independents, and 80% of Republicans.

Hunter Biden is also set to face trial on federal tax charges in September, after a judge granted his request to delay the California trial originally scheduled for June. The indictment claims Hunter Biden failed to pay at least $1.4 million in taxes over four years while leading an "extravagant lifestyle" amid his struggles with addiction. The back taxes have since been paid.

The Newsweek/Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey was conducted from June 26-28 among 2,500 registered voters.
