New Report: Harris Tried to Ban Handguns As City Attorney

As District Attorney of San Francisco, Kamala Harris supported a controversial handgun ban that required residents to surrender their firearms, a measure later struck down by state courts, spotlighting her aggressive stance on gun control.

New reports reveal that Kamala Harris, while serving as District Attorney of San Francisco, actively supported a controversial proposition aimed at banning the possession of handguns in the city. This initiative, known as Proposition H, sought to require residents to surrender all handguns within four months of its enactment.

On November 4, 2005, the *Mercury News* reported on the proposal, highlighting that several of San Francisco’s most progressive leaders, including Harris, were key sponsors of the ban. At the time, Mayor Gavin Newsom had yet to publicly endorse the measure, but the support from Harris and other officials signaled a strong push for the sweeping legislation.

Although Proposition H was approved by San Francisco voters on Election Day 2005, it faced immediate legal challenges and was ultimately struck down by state courts before it could take effect. The failed initiative has since become a focal point in discussions about Harris’s stance on gun control.

In addition to supporting the handgun ban, Harris also advocated for stricter firearm storage regulations during her tenure as DA. She publicly reassured San Francisco residents that being a legal gun owner would not exempt them from police checks to ensure compliance with gun control laws.

“Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home…doesn’t mean that we’re not going to walk into that home and check to see if you’re being responsible and safe in the way you conduct your affairs,” Harris stated at the time, raising concerns about privacy and the extent of police authority.

Harris’s aggressive approach to gun control during her time in San Francisco has resurfaced as a topic of interest, particularly in the context of her current role as Vice President of the United States. Her past support for stringent gun regulations continues to generate debate among advocates and opponents of gun control, as the nation grapples with the ongoing issue of firearm violence and safety.
