Nathan Wade, the boyfriend of Atlanta Prosecutor Fani Willis, has reportedly gone missing, complicating the House Judiciary Committee’s efforts to serve him a subpoena. The committee is seeking Wade’s testimony as part of an investigation into Willis, raising eyebrows over the unusual circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
According to Russell Dye, a spokesperson for the Judiciary Committee, the difficulty in locating Wade is "extremely unusual." The committee has served over 100 subpoenas this Congress with little controversy, typically without needing to resort to the U.S. Marshals. Dye expressed concern, stating, “Nathan Wade’s evasion of service is extremely unusual and will require the Committee to spend U.S. tax dollars to locate him.”
Should the committee require additional resources, it may need to hire a private investigator or dispatch a staff member to find Wade. This situation comes on the heels of a judge’s order in March that mandated Wade to step down from his position on the election interference case against former President Donald Trump. This ruling was part of a compromise that allowed Willis to remain on the case despite concerns about her relationship with Wade.
In February, the committee had previously subpoenaed Willis for documents related to her potential misuse of federal funds. Her failure to accept the subpoena via email led to the U.S. Marshals hand-delivering it. Concerns have also arisen regarding Wade’s contract, which reportedly awarded him a higher pay rate than Georgia’s top racketeering expert who was working on the same case.
Amid the unfolding investigation, Willis herself has faced scrutiny. Recently, she ignored a subpoena from a Georgia state senate committee investigating alleged misconduct, choosing instead to attend a legislative conference for the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C.
As of now, Nathan Wade has not responded to requests for comment, leaving both the committee and the public in the dark regarding his whereabouts and the implications for the ongoing investigations involving Willis.
