MSNBC and Walmart vs America

MSNBC’s recent attack labeling Trump voters as "despicable" has sparked outrage, but what’s more shocking is the silence from Walmart, whose board of directors includes MSNBC’s chairman. With Trump voters making up a large portion of Walmart's customer base, the retailer's quiet approval may come at a steep cost.

This week, MSNBC took a stunningly divisive turn by broadcasting an attack labeling every American who plans to vote for President Trump as “despicable.” In the history of American journalism, few media organizations have stooped to such openly partisan rhetoric. No apologies have been offered, nor has any retraction been issued. The silence from MSNBC—and perhaps more notably from others with ties to the network—has quietly endorsed this outrageously polarizing behavior.

What may come as a shock to many is not just the attack itself, but who is remaining silent. It’s estimated that Trump voters make up over two-thirds of the customer base shopping at Walmart stores across the country. However, those same shoppers might be surprised to learn that the Chairman of MSNBC, who approved the network’s inflammatory rhetoric, now sits on Walmart’s Board of Directors.

Walmart, a retail giant serving millions of Americans of all political persuasions, has yet to distance itself from the chairman’s remarks or the network’s assault on Trump voters. The silence from Walmart could be seen as a tacit approval of the name-calling aimed at a significant portion of their loyal customer base.

As tensions rise in an already deeply divided country, many Republicans may be wondering if it’s time to distance themselves from Walmart—just as the company has seemingly failed to distance itself from the controversial figure on its board. The question now is whether this corporate silence will lead to further backlash among conservative shoppers who feel alienated by the company’s association with MSNBC’s increasingly partisan rhetoric.
