Michigan Leaders Run From Biden Event

Michigan's top Democratic leaders, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, were conspicuously absent from President Joe Biden's rally in Detroit, fueling speculation about his troubled campaign and the growing calls within his party for a new nominee.

Michigan's top Democratic leaders were noticeably absent when President Joe Biden's troubled campaign visited Detroit. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Sen. Gary Peters, and U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Elissa Slotkin all skipped Biden’s rally on Friday, as reported by the Associated Press.

This comes amid growing calls from within the Democratic Party for Biden to step aside as the presumptive nominee following his poor debate performance. Notably, Whitmer, co-chair of Biden’s campaign, was out of state, while Peters and Slotkin also had other commitments.

Whitmer, considered a potential replacement for Biden, recently suggested on CNN that Biden should take a cognitive test and emphasized that the decision to remain the nominee rests with him. Slotkin, engaged in a tight Senate race, expressed concerns about Biden's impact on down-ballot Democrats, indicating her race was in a "dead heat" with her Republican opponent.

Sen. Gary Peters, despite missing the rally, expressed confidence in Biden’s ability to win the election and the Democrats' chances of maintaining or even expanding their Senate majority, despite challenging odds.
