Former First Lady Melania Trump issued a heartfelt statement on Sunday following the

assassination attempt on her husband, former President Donald Trump. She expressed her sympathy for the other victims who were shot during the incident.

In her emotional message posted on social media, Mrs. Trump shared, “When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change,” expressing gratitude for the brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their lives to protect her family.

Having remained largely out of the public eye during President Trump’s 2024 campaign, Mrs. Trump used this moment to call on Americans to “ascend above the hate” and reject “simple-minded ideas that incite violence.”

The attack occurred at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. A shooter opened fire from about 400 feet away while President Trump was speaking. Later, the former president confirmed that a bullet had pierced his right ear.

The U.S. Secret Service confirmed the suspect was killed and that one other victim died while two others were seriously injured. The identities of these victims have not been disclosed.

“A monster who saw my husband as an inhuman political machine tried to silence his passion—his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration,” Mrs. Trump said. “The core facets of my husband’s life—his human side—were buried beneath the political machine. Donald, the generous and caring man who I have been with through the best of times and the worst of times.”

She also thanked those who reached out to her family, reminding everyone that politicians are also human beings with loving families. “We all want a world where respect is paramount, family is first, and love transcends. We can realize this world again,” her statement said. “Each of us demand to get it back. We must insist that respect fills the cornerstone of our relationships again.”

Mrs. Trump concluded her statement with a powerful message: “Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love. Our personal, structural, and life commitment—until death—is at serious risk.”

The FBI identified the suspect as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed, and the FBI is continuing its investigation.

In the aftermath, President Trump and the Republican National Committee confirmed that he will attend the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee starting July 15. Michael Whatley, the RNC chairman, assured Fox News that they are working with the Secret Service and multiple law enforcement agencies to ensure security for the event.

President Trump is scheduled to receive the Republican Party nomination during the convention, which will conclude on Thursday.

Other members of the Trump family also released statements. Ivanka Trump, the former president’s daughter, expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and prayed for the country. Donald Trump Jr. posted an image of his father with his arm raised after the shooting, declaring, “He'll never stop fighting to Save America.” Eric Trump shared a similar sentiment and the same image, affirming that his father is “the fighter America needs.”

President Joe Biden and various politicians from both parties condemned the shooting, calling for a reduction in incendiary political rhetoric. “There is no place for this kind of violence in America. It’s sick,” President Biden said in an emergency briefing.

This incident marks the first major assassination attempt on a current or former president since President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
