Amidst Mayor Brandon Johnson's efforts and stringent gun control measures, Chicago remains engulfed in a relentless wave of gun violence, where tragedies unfold with alarming frequency, casting a shadow over the city's quest for peace.
Over the weekend in Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Chicago, at least 45 individuals fell victim to gun violence, tragically resulting in one fatality.
According to reports from ABC 7 and the Chicago Sun-Times, the fatal incident unfolded on Saturday around 11:30 p.m. during an altercation, escalating when two individuals drew firearms and began shooting. The altercation left a 50-year-old man, a 44-year-old man, and a 27-year-old woman wounded. The 44-year-old, who was armed but dropped his weapon after being shot, was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Breitbart News documented a similar wave of violence during the preceding weekend, May 10-12, 2024, where at least 21 people were shot, and sadly, three succumbed to their injuries.
Despite stringent firearm regulations in Illinois, including the requirement for a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card issued by the Illinois State Police, and additional local measures such as bans on certain firearms and magazines, a 72-hour waiting period for purchases, and red flag laws, the city continues to grapple with a concerning level of gun-related fatalities. In Cook County, where Chicago is situated, further firearm restrictions are in place, including an "assault weapons" ban.
Despite these measures, the Sun-Times highlighted a grim statistic: since January 1, 2024, 170 lives have been lost to gun violence in Chicago alone
