JD Vance's compelling life story has a central figure that may be even more compelling. Mamaw and her strength and character have America yearning for more.
JD Vance has a secret weapon but it is becoming less of a secret. Mamaw not only played a large role in his life but she played a captivating portion of his introduction to the country.
Last night Vance introduced himself and his family to America for the first time. We learned a lot. He was funny and serious, passionate and playful, Vegan and served up red meat.
At 39, Vance brings with him things common to families his age. Three young children ages 7,5, and 2. A young wife who is a brilliant attorney having clerked for the Chief Justice. He also brings the scars of struggle as a young person. He knows what hunger feels like. He knows the pain of poverty. He also knows the battles and casualties of addiction.
But what might have stolen the hearts of Americans was his Mamaw. For those unaware Mamaw is Appalachian for grandmother. Everyone has one. While they may be similar it is fair to say JD’s Mamaw stick out.
JD told the story about how unhappy his Mamaw was when he started hanging out with a kid that might have been making bad choices. Mamaw told him point blank that if he ever hung out with that kid again, she would run the kid over with her car. Mamaw added, “ And no one will ever know.”
Constant poverty compounded by addiction to opioids had left Appalachia in tatters. Hundreds of thousands have died from these poisons. Mamaw’s of every stripe, have picked up the pieces. Today they raise their grandchildren and what is left of their families.
These Mamaw’s are tough, resourceful and resilient. They are making their claim for claiming the mantle the greatest generation. They are changing lives every day just like JD’s Mamaw did for him.
Don’t cross them and certainly don’t become a threat to their family.
JD told the story that after his Mamaw passed he was cleaning out her home. During that clean out he found 19 handguns, all loaded and strategically placed throughout the house. Mamaw was prepared to defend her family.
Political campaigns are not something that people look forward to watching. But this just might be an exception. Americans very much look forward to hearing more about Mamaw.VANCE
