Major Democrat donors are demanding that President Joe Biden step down as the party's presidential nominee after his disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump.
Despite Biden's family and staunch supporters trying to downplay his performance in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday, many Democrats are seriously concerned about the 81-year-old president's ability to continue, according to a Politico report.
A recent Suffolk University/USA Today survey, released Monday, indicates that nearly one-third of voters are now more inclined to support Trump following the debate. Most respondents believe Democrats should consider a new nominee to replace Biden.
It seems some Democrat donors are hitting the panic button.
"For Biden's own good and the good of the country, he should step aside immediately," said Whitney Tilson, a major Democrat donor and former hedge fund manager, to DailyMail.com.
"The fact that it has now been three days and Biden has done nothing to reassure us confirms my worst fears," Tilson added.
Biden's campaign team claims the debate hasn't changed voters' minds, but some donors strongly disagree.
"They're p***ing on our legs and telling us it's raining. It's insulting. How stupid do they think we are?" Tilson remarked regarding the president's team.
According to Reuters, Biden's reelection team faced tough phone calls with key campaign funders on Sunday and Monday. These funders questioned whether the president should remain in the race and why they should continue donating after his poor debate showing.
On Monday evening, the campaign's National Finance Committee held an emergency call with hundreds of top Democrat donors and fundraisers to quell the growing panic, multiple sources familiar with the call reported.
The New York Times reported on Saturday that a group of Silicon Valley megadonors were actively communicating, describing the situation as a potential catastrophe.
CNN reported on Sunday that Biden supporters and donors are now divided into three camps: those who believe Biden should step aside, those who want more time to analyze post-debate poll data, and those who think the party should stick with Biden as the nominee.
"The smartest thing is to think through how you [as influential outsiders] operate, assuming no change," said Democrat fundraiser and strategist Dmitri Mehlhorn, according to CNN. "And if there's no change, if Biden wants to remain president, then any kind of pressure campaign is just a waste of time, energy, and money."
