An 18-year-old Honduran migrant, accused of entering the U.S. illegally, has been arrested in South Carolina for his alleged role in a shocking random shooting spree that left one person dead and several others wounded.
Police in South Carolina have arrested an 18-year-old Honduran migrant for his alleged involvement in a random shooting spree that resulted in one death. According to local news reports, the migrant entered the U.S. illegally by crossing the border from Mexico into Texas.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department investigators took Carlos Roberto Diaz, 18, into custody in connection with the alleged murder of a Charlotte resident. WSOC-TV9 reports that Diaz entered the U.S. illegally in 2019 with his father, crossing the Mexican border into Texas. It is unclear what happened to Diaz following his encounter with Border Patrol agents.
The arrest came after an investigation into a shooting spree that began around 1:30 a.m. on a Tuesday morning. Roberto Diaz and an unnamed 16-year-old juvenile allegedly conducted a series of random shootings, resulting in one death and several injuries.
“These were brazen crimes that put our community at risk and created a safety hazard,” CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings said at a press conference. “CMPD personnel took this personally. They saw it as a threat to the safety of Charlotte citizens and acted appropriately.”
The police initially arrested the 16-year-old juvenile in the early morning hours of July 11 after noticing a suspicious vehicle. Following a traffic stop, officers arrested the teen in connection with the alleged murder and other random shootings, seizing a firearm and the vehicle.
During questioning, the juvenile identified Roberto Diaz as the second suspect.
The first victim was 58-year-old Mustaffa Muhammad, who was found dead next to a car, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Carlos Roberto Diaz is charged with:
- First-degree murder
- Shooting into an occupied vehicle (x2)
- Felony conspiracy to commit murder
- Attempted murder (x5)
- Shooting into an occupied dwelling (x2)
- Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill/inflict serious injury
The unidentified juvenile is also charged with first-degree murder in the death of Muhammad.
Breitbart Texas reached out to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officials to verify Diaz's immigration status but received no confirmation. Jail officials stated that Roberto Diaz is being held on a $100,000 bond.
