Illegal Immigrant Arrested In Shooting In Alabama

A Mexican national illegally in the U.S. has been arrested for a shooting in Montgomery, Alabama, raising concerns about border security and public safety.

Alberto Martinez-Fidel has been arrested in connection with a Sunday morning shooting in Montgomery, Alabama. Martinez is accused of shooting another resident in the back and buttocks, causing serious bodily injury.

Details about the victim have not been fully disclosed, but court documents suggest that Martinez allegedly shot the victim at close range with a handgun. Following his arrest, Martinez was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility and charged with First Degree Assault.

According to a report by WSFA12, Martinez’s bond was set at $30,000. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has since identified Martinez as a Mexican national illegally present in the United States.

An ICE spokesperson provided the following statement to Breitbart Texas: “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations filed a detainer on Alberto Martinez-Fidel, 46, an unlawfully present Mexican national, on August 5, 2024, after his arrest by the Montgomery Police Department. ICE does not have any previous immigration information on this individual.”

ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) files immigration detainers for migrants arrested for criminal activity by state or local law enforcement. These detainers request that the agency holding the individual notify ICE before their release, allowing ICE to assume custody for removal proceedings. The detainer is accompanied by an administrative warrant of arrest authorized by Congress.

The absence of an immigration record suggests that Martinez-Fidel may have entered the U.S. illegally between ports of entry, evading Border Patrol agents. If so, he could be among the more than 800,000 "got-aways" reported by U.S. Border Patrol over the past three years.
