Illegal Deported 16 Times Causes Fatal Crash Killing 64-Year-Old Coloradan

Ignacio Crus-Mendoza has been deported 16 times before killing a man in Colorado. Victims family is furious and devastated.

An illegal immigrant from Mexico, deported 16 times, has been sentenced to just one year in prison for causing a fatal crash that killed 64-year-old Scott Miller in Conifer, Colorado.

In June, 47-year-old Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza was arrested for vehicular homicide in connection to the crash. However, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office only charged him with misdemeanor traffic violations. Before felony charges could be filed, Cruz-Mendoza pled guilty to the traffic offenses, capping his sentence at one year for Miller's death.

“I’m furious that the DA didn’t press more serious charges,” said Deann Miller, Scott’s widow. “This man killed my husband, and all he gets is a year.”

The Colorado State Patrol reported that Cruz-Mendoza, driving a semi-truck for Monique Trucking, veered off Highway 285 near Conifer, causing pipes and iron to fall onto five vehicles. Miller was killed at the scene, and another driver was seriously injured.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Cruz-Mendoza had been deported 16 times in the past two decades, with the first deportation occurring in May 2002. He had repeatedly returned to the U.S., likely through the southern border. ICE has placed a detainer on Cruz-Mendoza, seeking custody upon his release from prison.
