Harris surrogate Jon Cryer inflames tensions by dismissing Republicans upset over Biden's "garbage" remark as “douchebags,” complicating the campaign's efforts to contain the fallout just days before the election.
Actor Jon Cryer, a prominent surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris, sparked further controversy by labeling Republicans upset over President Joe Biden’s recent “garbage” remark as “douchebags.” Cryer’s comments came amid a campaign scramble to contain the fallout from Biden’s insult to Trump supporters, which he made during a virtual discussion with journalists.
Attempting to clarify the president's remarks, Cryer posted on X, “Biden misspoke, and quickly clarified his meaning,” before adding, “But nice try, douchebags.” Yet, video evidence from the event shows Biden explicitly saying, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his [Trump’s] supporters.” In response to backlash, Biden later claimed he was referring to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's joke about Puerto Rico at a recent Trump rally in Madison Square Garden, not all Trump supporters.
This controversy is another blow to Harris’s final campaign push just days before the election. At a Washington D.C. rally focused on the January 6 Capitol incident—a subject polling shows is not a top priority for voters—Harris hoped to make her case. Instead, Cryer’s inflammatory comments have only deepened the political divide, casting doubt on the campaign’s ability to control its narrative in the closing days.
