As Kamala Harris launches her presidential campaign, she reveals her support for reparations for Black Americans, signaling a bold stance on racial justice as she steps into the spotlight.
Vice President Kamala Harris has publicly expressed support for reparations for Black Americans, a revelation that comes just as her presidential campaign gains momentum.
Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race last Sunday and his endorsement of Harris, the focus has shifted to what her potential presidency could entail. Biden’s decision followed weeks of internal debate within the Democratic Party, especially after his underwhelming performance in the first presidential debate against Donald Trump in June.
In an interview with Black publication The Root, Harris voiced her backing for reparations, acknowledging the need to address the United States' history of slavery and ongoing racial discrimination.
"I think there has to be some form of reparations, and we could discuss what that is, but look, we're looking at more than 200 years of slavery," Harris said. "We're looking at almost 100 years of Jim Crow. We're looking at legalized segregation and, in fact, segregation on so many levels that exist today based on race. There has not been any kind of intervention to correct the harm and damage caused. We are still seeing the effects of those years play out today."
When asked if she would pursue this issue as president, Harris confirmed she would lead a national conversation on what reparations for Black Americans should look like, including addressing issues like untreated trauma within the community.
