The University of Michigan is grappling with a deepening crisis as pro-Palestinian students seize control of the student government, halting funding for campus groups in a bold demand for the university to divest from and boycott Israel.
The University of Michigan is facing a growing crisis beyond the NCAA's sports investigations, as pro-Palestinian students have taken control of the student government and halted funding for student groups until the administration agrees to divest from and boycott Israel.
According to The New York Times, pro-Palestinian activists, under the Shut It Down party, gained control of the Central Student Government (C.S.G.), which typically allocates $1.3 million to about 400 campus organizations. The group is now withholding funds until the university meets their demands regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Even groups that supported Shut It Down, such as Students Organize for Syria and the Muslim Students Association, face losing funding. The tensions on campus escalated when four pro-Palestinian activists were arrested during a protest on the main quad, according to the Detroit Free Press. Though the university has resisted calls for divestment, student protests are expected to continue.
