Haitian Migrants Begin Self Deporting From Ohio

Fearing a crackdown under Trump and Vance, thousands of Haitian migrants are fleeing Springfield, Ohio, for sanctuary cities like Chicago and New York, reshaping the immigration debate.

Thousands of Haitian migrants are reportedly leaving Springfield, Ohio, a city of just 50,000 residents, and heading for sanctuary jurisdictions such as Chicago, Illinois, and New York City, New York. The exodus comes in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance's election victory, signaling a potential crackdown on immigration policies that brought the migrants to Springfield.

Over the past few years, the small Midwestern city became a hub for 10,000 to 20,000 Haitian migrants, many entering under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or granted parole after crossing the southern border under President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. Their arrival strained local resources, with surges in housing costs, welfare dependency, and emergency service demands.

Reports from CBS News and *The Guardian* confirm that many Haitian migrants are now leaving Springfield, citing fears of increased enforcement under the incoming administration. One Haitian woman said she knows of at least ten friends and family members who have already relocated to sanctuary cities. Immigration activists also noted a steady outflow, with Chicago and New York City as popular destinations.

Springfield’s housing market has been one of the most visible flashpoints. Landlords have taken advantage of the influx, raising rents to as much as $2,000 to $3,000 per month for apartments shared by multiple migrant families. This practice has priced out many long-time residents, exacerbating the housing crisis.

Vice President-elect JD Vance has consistently linked mass immigration to housing affordability issues. “Twenty-five million illegal aliens competing with Americans for scarce homes is one of the most significant drivers of home prices in the country,” Vance argued during a debate earlier this year. “The Biden-Harris administration’s open border policies have directly contributed to these skyrocketing costs.”

With the Trump administration poised to tighten immigration enforcement, Springfield’s migrant population may dwindle further as more families seek refuge in cities that have pledged to protect undocumented immigrants. This migration highlights the far-reaching impact of shifting federal immigration policies, particularly on small communities like Springfield.
