In a startling move, GovTrack, a self-proclaimed government transparency organization, has quietly deleted its 2019 report ranking Kamala Harris as the most liberal senator—a move raising eyebrows and questions about political bias.
In a surprising move, a second organization that claims to be non-partisan has attempted to delete its previous reporting, seemingly in an effort to support Kamala Harris's campaign. This latest instance involves GovTrack, a self-described government transparency organization that rates Members of Congress. In 2019, GovTrack scored Vice President Kamala Harris as the “most liberal senator.” Yesterday, the group tried to quietly delete that report from its website.
GovTrack's 2019 list ranked all 100 senators, placing Harris at the #100 spot, indicating she was viewed as the most liberal senator. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was right behind her at #99. However, this list has now been deleted, leading to a “page not found” message when attempting to access it.
GovTrack claims to publish the status of federal legislation and information on representatives or senators who have been elected to Congress, including voting records and original research on legislation. “We’re one of the oldest government transparency websites in the world,” the website states.
A prominent Capitol Hill observer commented, "When an organization is willing to trash their entire reputation to help a particular party and candidate, what we have really learned is that they have been a fraud all along."
During a 2020 interview with CBS News’s Norah O’Donnell, Harris was questioned about being “considered the most liberal United States senator.” Harris responded, “Somebody said that, and it was actually Mike Pence on the debate stage.” O’Donnell then informed her that the “nonpartisan” GovTrack had rated her as the most liberal senator, adding, “You supported the Green New Deal, you supported Medicare for all.”
In another instance of revising Harris's past, Axios released an article claiming that Harris never had the title “border czar,” despite references by lawmakers and media outlets. The outlet later updated the article with an editor’s note acknowledging the error in labeling Harris a “border czar” in 2021.
