In a surprising shift, former DNC delegate Audrey McNeal has left the Democratic Party to back Trump, citing disillusionment with its stance on free speech and transparency.
Former Democratic National Convention delegate Audrey McNeal, a young political voice from Georgia, made waves Friday by announcing her departure from the Democratic Party and declaring her support for the Trump-Vance ticket. The 22-year-old, who represented her district at the DNC in both 2020 and 2024, revealed on X that she would be crossing party lines to join the Republicans.
"In 2020, I was elected at 18 as one of the youngest delegates to the Democratic National Convention," McNeal said, “But this year, I’m casting my ballot for Donald Trump.” She explained that her decision followed growing disillusionment, particularly with what she perceives as a shift away from the party’s commitment to free speech, transparency, and civil liberties.
McNeal’s frustration, she shared, intensified when Democratic leaders opted to bypass a primary, placing Kamala Harris at the top of the 2024 ticket after Joe Biden’s withdrawal, effectively sidelining the voices of 14 million Democratic voters, including delegates like herself. McNeal quoted Patrick Henry, highlighting her belief that her former party’s actions ran counter to transparency and accountability.
Her first post as a Republican included a quote from Justice Louis Brandeis: “It is the function of speech to free men from the bondage of irrational fears,” underscoring her new stance as a constitutional conservative dedicated to defending free expression and individual liberties.
