In a major blow to Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign, Hamtramck Mayor Ameer Ghalib, a Muslim Democrat, has endorsed Donald Trump for president, signaling a key shift in Michigan's Arab American voter base.
Former President Donald Trump announced that Ameer Ghalib, the Muslim Democrat mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan, has officially endorsed his 2024 presidential campaign against Vice President Kamala Harris. In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Trump praised Ghalib, citing his appreciation for the Trump administration’s foreign policy, which he credited for avoiding major conflicts. Trump also expressed his openness to holding a campaign event in Hamtramck, home to one of the largest Muslim communities in Michigan.
“I was very impressed with him,” Trump said of Ghalib. “He saw a world at peace under my administration, and now we are facing the threat of World War III. I’m the only one who can stop that.”
Ghalib, a Yemeni immigrant and Democrat, had previously encouraged Muslim Democrats to vote “Uncommitted” in Michigan's Democratic primary, leading to the “Abandon Harris” movement. His endorsement of Trump marks a significant shift in Arab and Muslim voter support in Wayne County, a region that has historically backed Democrats.
This endorsement could have serious implications for Harris’s chances in Michigan, a pivotal swing state. With over 100,000 Arab voters previously rejecting Biden in the 2020 election, losing this key voting bloc could push Michigan toward Trump, further complicating Harris’s path to the presidency.
