Democrat ActBlue Fundraising Arm Under Investigation For Fraud

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee have launched an investigation into the Democrat Party's top donor platform, ActBlue, over allegations of widespread fraud and illegal contributions, raising questions about the integrity of campaign finance in federal elections.

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee have launched an investigation into the Democratic National Committee’s donor platform, ActBlue, over allegations of "potential fraud" tied to donations made to federal campaigns. Led by prominent figures such as Rep. James Comer (R-KY) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the inquiry centers around reports of illicit financial activity involving contributions processed through ActBlue, a major online fundraising platform for Democrat candidates.

In a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the lawmakers highlighted their concerns about fraud and violations of campaign finance laws, calling for access to Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) relevant to their investigation. They argued that ActBlue failed to implement basic security measures, such as requiring Card Verification Value (CVV) for online transactions, until it faced public criticism.

The investigation comes amid reports that ActBlue facilitated questionable donations, including cases in Virginia where individual donors allegedly made thousands of contributions amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars without their knowledge. These revelations have raised fears that foreign nationals and others may have used fraudulent means to exploit campaign finance loopholes.

Republican officials in several states, including Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray, and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, have also launched investigations into ActBlue's practices. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton began a similar probe in late 2023.

The Oversight Committee's inquiry seeks to determine whether ActBlue’s failure to vet contributions properly has enabled bad actors to bypass campaign finance laws, potentially allowing illegal contributions from foreign nationals or individuals attempting to exceed legal donation limits.

This investigation could have significant implications for campaign finance regulation as Republicans intensify scrutiny on online fundraising platforms and their role in federal elections.
