California Progressives Oppose Increasing Penalties of Child Sex Trafficking

Senator Susan Eggman’s fight to toughen California law for child sex trafficking from a mere Misdameanor meets opposition from Democrat Party’s Progressive Caucus.

Democratic Senator Susan Eggman of California, representing part of San Joaquin County, stood resolute on the Senate floor, her voice charged with determination. She addressed her colleagues with fervor, advocating for tougher measures against those who exploit children for commercial sex.

In the heart of legislative debate, Senator Eggman denounced attempts by some progressive members of her own party to dilute the proposed legislation. With unwavering conviction, she declared her frustration, stating, "I'm done with us protecting people who would buy and abuse our children."

The proposed bill, championed by Senator Eggman and authored by GOP Senator Shannon Grove, sought to elevate the penalty for purchasing or soliciting minors for commercial sex to a felony, with a minimum prison sentence of two to four years and mandatory sex offender registration.

Senator Eggman's impassioned plea resonated with a call for moral responsibility, rejecting the notion of accepting leniency towards such egregious crimes. She emphasized the need to draw a clear line, refusing to condone a system that allows the exploitation of vulnerable children to persist.

Acknowledging concerns about the disproportionate impact on marginalized communities, Senator Eggman emphasized the urgency of protecting all children, regardless of race or socioeconomic background. She urged her fellow legislators to prioritize the safety and well-being of these vulnerable youth over political considerations.

With overwhelming support, the bill, backed by Governor Gavin Newsom, passed unanimously in the Senate and advanced to the state Assembly. Senator Eggman's unwavering advocacy stood as a testament to her commitment to justice and protection for California's children.
