At a sparsely attended rally, President Joe Biden’s fiery comments about wanting to "smack" Donald Trump raised eyebrows, with one observer calling it “sad” to see the elderly leader acting “tough.”
In an unusually combative appearance on the campaign trail, President Joe Biden, 81, raised eyebrows with heated remarks about former President Donald Trump. Speaking to a small crowd of around 100 attendees at a Harris campaign event in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden’s rhetoric included a pointed comment about wanting to "smack" Trump on the rear—a statement that has drawn mixed reactions.
“It is both shocking and sad that a man that clearly has trouble walking and thinking clearly wants to pretend he’s a tough guy. I am just happy Corn Pop wasn’t here to see it,” one observer noted, referencing Biden's past anecdote about a confrontation with a local figure named Corn Pop from his youth.
CNN’s Vincent Galko described the crowd as sparse, underscoring the apparent low enthusiasm surrounding Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign events. During his remarks, Biden conveyed a “visceral distaste” for Trump, particularly when referencing past Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and cut taxes for the wealthy.
“You really did get a sense of the stakes that he sees,” Galko noted, “but also his personal anger toward Trump.” Biden has made similar comments in the past, once suggesting he’d like to take Trump “behind a building.” His strong language this time, however, has renewed questions about his approach as he hits the campaign trail in the final stretch of the election.
