As President Biden faces increasing pressure from within his own party to step aside, a recent interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos has done little to quell Democratic concerns about his ability to defeat former President Trump.
President Biden's interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos did little to alleviate growing concerns from Democratic members of Congress about his ability to defeat former President Trump.
Four House Democrats have publicly called for Biden to step down from the ticket, with lawmakers indicating that more are expected to follow soon.
During the 22-minute interview, Biden insisted he has the stamina to take on Trump and refused to take a cognitive test.
The president dismissed polls indicating he's trailing his Republican rival and downplayed the pressure from his Democratic allies to withdraw from the race. He made it clear he's not dropping out: "If the Lord Almighty came down and said 'Joe, get out of the race,' I'd get out of the race. The Lord Almighty's not coming down."
What we're hearing: "No one's mind has been changed," a House Democrat said, adding that a growing number of lawmakers agree "it's time" for Biden to step aside and are "hoping to give him space to do this on his own."
A House Democrat mentioned that their colleagues found Biden's interview "not impressive" and believe "he's toast" in November. "The interview hardly inspires confidence. It changes nothing."
House Democrats were "shocked" by Biden's "refusal to recognize reality" regarding the polling data.
