38 Shot Over Chicago Weekend

As Chicago gears up to host the Democratic National Convention, a surge in violence over the weekend left 36 people shot and eight dead, highlighting the city's ongoing struggle with gun violence despite stringent firearm regulations.

As Chicago prepares to host the upcoming Democratic National Convention, the city faced a violent weekend with at least 36 people shot, eight of them fatally, under Mayor Brandon Johnson’s (D) administration.

Breitbart News reported that from Friday night to Saturday, 13 people were shot, and five of those victims succumbed to their injuries.

By Monday morning, ABC 7 confirmed the total number of shooting victims had increased to 36, including three additional fatalities on Sunday.

Two of these fatalities occurred in a single incident early Sunday morning in the Calumet Park neighborhood’s 12300-block of South Halsted. Inside a Jeep Cherokee, two men were found shot to death, each sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

Another fatality involved a 19-year-old who was shot and killed at a gas station in the 2800 block of South Kedzie Avenue just before 5 p.m. on Sunday. In this incident, three people were shot in total, with the other two victims surviving, though one remains in critical condition.

Despite Chicago and Illinois having some of the strictest gun control measures in the country—including an "assault weapons" ban, a "high capacity" magazine ban, a red flag law, a 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases, and a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card requirement—gun violence continues to plague the city. Additionally, Cook County enforces its own "assault weapons" ban, further tightening local gun restrictions.
