23 Shot in Chicago This Weekend

As Democrats convene in Chicago, the city faces a grim reality with a weekend of violence that left 23 people shot and four dead under Mayor Brandon Johnson's leadership.


As Democrats gather in Chicago for their National Convention, the city witnessed another violent weekend under Mayor Brandon Johnson’s leadership, with at least 23 people shot, four of them fatally.


The first fatal shooting occurred just before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday in the 4500-block of South Champlain Avenue. A 28-year-old man standing on the sidewalk was shot multiple times and later died at the hospital, according to ABC 7.


Later that morning, around 4:40 a.m., a 53-year-old man was outside in the 4700-block of West Polk Street when he heard shots and felt pain. He had been shot in the abdomen and died after being taken to the hospital.


By 2:30 p.m. that same day, another fatal shooting occurred when an armed man approached a man in his 30s and shot him in the back and neck. The victim succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital.


In a separate incident early Sunday, just after 1:15 a.m., two Chicago Police Department officers from the Robbery Task Force engaged an alleged armed suspect. The officers, responding to the sound of gunfire, shot the suspect, who later died at the hospital, as reported by WGN-TV.


So far in 2024, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that 355 people have been killed in the city.
